The analogy of how the pig and the chicken populate your breakfast plate, to illustrate the difference between commitment and involvement, is applicable to Russian-Iranian cooperation in Syria. Russia is involved; Iran is committed.

It’s a useful lesson for the West; if it wants to get its own way in Syria, it cannot hope to pry off Iran, but if it satisfies enough Russian interests, it could do so with Moscow. This lengthy Carnegie essay is worth the time it takes to read.
